Katrina Neighbors - Notes and Feedback

Pamela Broom spoke of the efforts that brought Katrina Neighbors into being and about creating community among a diverse group of people who were settling in a new place. She then solicited questions and in response to a question about her point of view or reaction to the word "recovery," Pamela spoke of her tendency to think in images. Soon after Katrina she saw herself as a small child curled in the fetal position with her thumb in her mouth. She wanted to go home. But there was no home to go to. Now, 7 months on, she sees herself as in gestation - as 7 months pregnant. She is giving herself time and space and in two more months she will be giving birth to something, something new, although she is not quite sure what. She is trying to stay in a place of forgiveness.

Ray Eurquhart spoke of his role in effecting community change as a facilitator. Their community has a sort of motto he stated, "Solidarity not Charity." Working together, doing what they can do to make life better for everyone, is the foundation of their work, not giving and begging.
