Working Together: Exploring the Collective Nature of Leadership

Why we propose to focus our learning on collective and community leadership: Confronted by the scale of change we seek, the changing environments in which leadership is exercised, and the contributions and limitations of current leadership development work, we find ourselves asking how we can increase the scope and impact of our leadership development efforts. Much in the practice, literature and traditions of collective leadership offer the promise of increased innovation, enhanced learning, boundary crossing that supports systemic solutions, self-organizing, and effectively connected and mobilized networks. We would like to explore and learn about the contributions of collective approaches to all of our leadership development work and our shared aspirations for social change.

What we mean by collective leadership: Important questions have been raised in the Leadership Learning Community about what we mean by "collective leadership:" i.e. Is it some new type of leadership? Is it meant to describe leadership behaviors? Are we suggesting changes in the practice of leadership in response to specific needs?

We appreciate these questions because they are helping to clarify our purpose in focusing this year's learning on collective leadership. Our intention is not to name or lay claim to some new model of leadership. We hope to increase our understanding of how all leadership development work can help participants to effectively mobilize individuals, organizations, communities and societies to act together to solve the most significant social problems of our times.

An increasing number of leadership programs believe there is a need to help individual leaders work more effectively across boundaries and to support collective decision making and joint action. While there is not clear language or definition of “collective leadership,” as we listen to those who describe their work, there seem to be some simple unifying assumptions:

  • Collective leadership requires individual intention and a commitment to collective behavior that also strengthens individual growth and impact
  • Collective leadership is about relationships that cross boundaries
  • Collective leadership results in collective action and shared accountability
  • Collective leadership is exercised on behalf of an agreed upon greater good

We are deliberately offering framing assumptions instead of a definition because our intent is to open our learning to full exploration, and trust that a definition, if useful, will emerge from our practice and experiences.

A foundation for deeper inquiry and learning: Members of the LLC have begun to take up questions of collective and community leadership through their work over the past several years. We are in a good position to build on a diversity of practice, research and evaluation that can enrich our learning about the potential scope and impact of collective leadership and how it can be nurtured and developed through our leadership development work. We will enlist your help to mine and deepen this experience through formal and informal elements of the Creating Space design.

Emerging Lessons: What does it take for leadership to foster collective action? The Evaluation Circle responded to a series of questions about "collective" leadership practices and began to identify a number of elements of leadership approaches that develop the abilities of participants to organize and mobilize the action of others. Please feel free to read and contribute to their work in progress on the Evaluation wiki.

New Design Ideas: The Creating Space VIII Design Team has taken to heart the importance of being more collective in our approach to the design of CS VIII. We are encouraging community contributors to use open space so that times and space allocated for their offering and work can be driven more by community need than the assumptions of a selection committee. To accommodate AV and structural needs there will still be some assignments of community contributions to designated rooms in formal time slots.  You can access a PDF of the agenda here (Please Note: Correct address is 503 N. Charles Street NOT 501 as indicated on agenda) Participants_Agenda_CSVIII_PDF.pdf.

Emerging Ideas in the Community: Do you have an idea for a discusstion you'd like to convene at Creating Space that is not reflected here? Come prepared to annouce your idea or issue and covene a group during Open Space!

What can you expect at the meeting?: Most of all, you should expect to meet some amazing people who share your passion for leadership development and are eager to take time out for reflection and collective learning. If you have not been to a Creating Space before, it will be different, it will be provocative, and it will be fun! Stay tuned for more details as we refine the design and confirm conversation catalysts.

Who should attend?

Everyone with an interest in leadership development will benefit from this discussion. Whether the focus of our leadership development work is on the individual or the group, we are all eager to learn from each other’s work about how to expand the influence and impact of our efforts. We believe that those doing collective leadership and community leadership work have an important contribution to make to this discussion and learning.  See the Participant List for a preview of who has already registered as of March 28th Participants4_5_CSVIII_PDF.pdf.

What is the cost of attending? All registration rates are below our actual costs thanks to a generous grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the donation of meeting space by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. On the registration form (CS8_Reg_Form-updated.pdf) you will find a sliding scale that ranges from $325 - $550 based on your organization and budget. These are offered as guidelines and not meant to exclude the participation of any organization.

Equity Fund: If the proposed registration costs would prevent your participation please review the criteria and then contact Bella Celnik to let us know what additional support would make it possible for you to join us for Creating Space VIII. A W.K. Kellogg grant will help to support an equity access fund.

Location: CS VIII will be held at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, located at their 501 N. Charles Street site in Baltimore, Maryland. The Annie E. Casey Foundation is located in one of Baltimore’s most architecturally rich neighborhoods and cultural centers – Mount Vernon Cultural District. It is home to many examples of stunning mid-19th century architecture.

This year, through the Annie E. Casey Foundation, we were able to secure a special rate with the Peabody Court which is also in the Mount Vernon neighborhood and just a few short blocks from the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Single and double occupancy is $148/night. We have blocked a limited number of rooms and we encourage you to make your reservations now. We recently learned that the National Catholic Convention will be happening in Baltimore at the same time as CS VIII and hotels all over Baltimore are beginning to fill quickly. The reservation is under: Annie E. Casey Foundation/Leadership Learning Community Meeting. You can ask for Debbie at: 1-800/292-5500. We will post information on additional hotels in the area soon.

IMPORTANT UPDATED HOTEL INFORMATION:  Please note that the Peabody Court is full and refer to the attached for updated hotel suggestions

UpdatedHotelInfo_PDF.pdf.

Registration: We also encourage you to register now by downloading and completing the registration form and returning it to us. This will help the Design Team plan, secure your spot, and enable us to communicate with you about the schedule, who is coming, what will be shared and a number of other exciting learning activities!

We look forward to seeing you in Baltimore!

If you have any questions or suggestions we would love to hear from you. Contact Pauline.
